Welcome to Year 1

There are two classes in year 1. Your child will be in either class CS with Mrs Standish or class AS/KP with Mrs Simpson (Mon-Weds) and Mrs Price (Thurs-Fri).

Our teaching assistants are Mrs Simmons, Miss Edwards and Miss Taylor

We use Class Dojo to let parents know how when their children receive praise for something they have done in school. This could include:

• Sensible behaviour
• Excellent effort
• Kindness
• Great work

Once you have downloaded the Class Dojo app and inputted the unique code for your child you will receive alerts when your child has earned a ‘dojo’. This can really help reinforce the praise that we are giving at school as well as being a useful reminder when children say they can’t remember what happened at school.

Please note that we are not using all of the features of Class Dojo at Muxton. We will continue to use the year group email addresses for communication with teachers so please do not use the messaging section of Class Dojo as this will not be monitored.

Weekly Timetable

Year 1

Both Year 1 classes will have P.E on Thursdays **Please remember to send your child’s P.E kit in each Thursday, in a bag clearly labelled with their name** Information on the school P.E kit can be found here: Uniform | Muxton Primary School

Reading

In Year 1 phonics are the main way your child will learn to read. Each child has a phonics folder which contains the latest phonic sounds that have been covered in class using our Floppy’s Phonics Scheme. It is important to look at the sheets at least 3/4 times a week and listen to your child read the focus words and sentences as this helps your child embed the sounds learned. This will really help your child progress and meet the requirements of the Year 1 Phonic Check that they take in June.

By the end of Y1 the children also have to learn to read and spell the following ‘helpful’ words which do not follow any particular phonic pattern.

Your child will also need to bring their reading folder into school every day as we may have additional opportunities to hear your child read. Your child’s reading books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.  If your child needs to access reading between book changing days then you can access our fabulous online reading books through Bug Club using this link: https://www.activelearnprimary.co.uk/login?c=0

Passwords for Bug Club will be found in the front of your child’s home-school link books later in the year.

Communication

If you need to communicate an important message with your child’s class teacher this can be done via email year1@muxtonprimary.org.uk or alternatively please notify support staff at the door.

Homework

Homework will be set on a weekly basis via the website. Your child can record their work in their homework folder which will be sent home each Friday. Please bring homework folders into school by Wednesday of the following week.

BugClub We subscribe to BugClub to give you access to a wide selection of online books for KS1 and KS2. Once your child has read a book they can then answer comprehension questions to check their understanding. Your child will have a logon card stuck into their Home School Links book later in the year.

PurpleMash PurpleMash has a suite of software that can be used to support learning across the curriculum – your child will have a logon card stuck into their Home School Links book.

BBC Bitesize BBC Bitesize has a range of learning materials for KS1 and KS2 children.

Sumdog Sumdog has a range of great maths games that can be played online  – your child will have a logon card stuck into their Home School Links book.

Kiddle Kiddle is a safe search engine for children.

Phonics Play Phonics Play has a range of online phonic based games for children to overlearn sounds and to teach blending and decoding skills.

Phonics Bloom Phonics Bloom has a range of free and subscription based phonics games and activities linked to each of the phases.

Topmarks  Topmarks has a range of free phonics games and activities linked to each of the phases and support for tricky Phase 4 consonant clusters.

Mathplayground Mathplayground has game-based activities linked to all strands of maths including calculations, shape, money and time.
